Welcome to My Blog

Hello, my name is Kierra Harvey and I am a freshman at Clemson University. Through my blog I will be arguing about the positive sides of intervention. I hope you will take the time out to look at my blog and hear my argument out. Well on that note ENJOY!

Final Draft

According to A&E television, intervention is described as a session where people come together to confront their darkest demons and seek a route to redemption. Intervention is used as an awareness tool to those who may suffer from alcohol, drug, or any obsessive addiction. There are so many drugs out there ranging from methamphetamines to PCP. The use of these drugs comes with so many life threatening outcomes. The users may suffer from an increased risk of getting the HIV/Aids virus, increased weight loss, anxiety attacks, aggressiveness, a great amount of psychiatric problems, damage to the nervous system, and many more turmoil ("A&E Television" ).Intervention is a caring process where a third party gets involved to assist a person they deeply care about in time of need. Intervention is a very positive aspect in a person’s life. One positive effect that comes from intervention is that the person is allowed to get the help that they strongly need. A second positive effect of intervention is that it heals old wounds that the family may have experienced, and a third positive effect is that it lightens financial burdens that the family or patient has to face. After evaluating the opinions of the negative side, it has been agreed upon that the intervention process has both positive and negative effects, but the good outweighs the bad.A positive effect of intervention is that the user is allowed to seek the help strongly needed. As quoted from addiction interventionist, Jim Shelton, “Interventions are never for the purpose of shaming, blaming, attacking, or taking the opportunity to attack others.” Study shows that addicted people usually lose the ability to ask for help. They grow hysterical and start believing that what they are doing is actually fine, but through the intervention process the user gets help by being able to see their loved ones reflect the hurt that they feel from the patient’s destructive behavior. Intervention can serve as a mirror for the loved ones of the user to show them how much trouble they are actually in. The user has too much guards up for them to be able to go through a realistic self-assessment; That’s where the intervention process takes place. There are basically two therapeutic models of intervention: the Johnson Model and the Systemic Family Intervention. The Johnson Model is when participants meet with an interventionist to prepare for the process without the knowledge of the user until the actual intervention. The Systemic Family Intervention is where the user is invited to participate in the preparation of the intervention process (Shelton ). By going through either of the intervention processes, the patient is able to participate in a well thought out plan to get him or her back on the right track and alleviate the pain that he or she may have caused loved ones. Any addiction whether it be drug, alcohol, or any compulsive behavior that may cause a person to stray away from loved ones could be very troublesome in their life. It not only affects the person involved in the addiction, but it also affects the people that are close to them. It could break up many families. Part of what intervention teaches the user is that a family intervention is the changing of the dynamics of the family with the self-destructing user. It helps them want to stay clean after the intervention, so they will not end up relapsing (Interventions ). With the help that is offered the victim usually starts pulling away from the problems that they face and gradually improving for the better. The intervention process can end up down two routes depending on the party involved. Interventions can bring up hidden emotions and heal old wounds. It depends on how bad off the patient is to determine their response to the intervention. Some patients may shut down and discontinue the process, but on the other hand some patients may take in what is being said. Intervention is indeed a delicate situation. Intervention is there to teach the user and the family about the process of intervening and the procedures that will follow. “However unpleasant or emotionally trying it will be to intervene, it is crucial to remember that such a drastic action can save a life” (Interventions ). According to A&E television most reports of people after their interventions usually are all successful. Intervention helps users realize how much they are hurting the people that really love them. Some benefits that intervention offers are: the patient becoming clean, the families being reunited, the bad habit gone, and new beginnings.Although the idea of paying for the intervention process is better than the idea of supporting the addict’s habit; interventions could also cause a financial burden to most families. The cost of intervention to society can range from ($370,000-$970,000) in heavy drug users (Foster, Jones ). Not all families that participate in interventions have the money to pay for a state- of the- art treatment facility. I am sure that the family of the patient would like the patient to have the best treatment that money could buy, but this is only a dream to some of the families that participate in the intervention process. The intervention process works alongside with treatment and recovery centers. It offers the victim the professional help that is strongly needed. Money can be a huge deal when trying to help someone dealing with a serious issue, but it pays off if the intervention is successful. The primary purpose of intervention is to help and encourage the user that they need to go and get treatment. Intervention is a life saving event. It is best if the participants rehearse what it is that they are going to say with a defined understanding and objective of the goal. With the goals and objectives in mind as quoted from Jim Shelton, “THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A FAILED INTERVENTION!!!”(Shelton).
